Boat fishing:

 alt

Skarnsundet Fjordsenter is offering perfect conditions for boat fishing in the Trondheimfjord.

With a length of 130km the Fjord is the third longest Fjord in Norway. Around 90 species of fish can be caught.

Klaas Jan Jonkman is your contact person for boat fishing

If you are planning to come and fish with us here are some tips for a successful fishing holiday:

 Rod:

medium heavy fishing rod witha length of 1.80-2.30 m., 30 lbs. At least 300

m. super braid line of 10-15kg.  A multiplier is necessary; with this combination

you should be able to land every fish. Depending on the current and the wind,

you can fish to a maximum of 100 m. with weights up to 400 g. With theserods

the use of a butt pad would be recommended If you are new to this kind of

fishing or are only fishing once or twice a year you willprobably not have muc h

more equipment. If you are more experienced here aresome suggestions for

what else you could take along.

Light: a rod with a length of2.15-2.40 m., 200 m. super braid line with a

breaking strength of 6-10 kg.Preferably a small multiplier, for instance the Abu

6500 series. With such arod a casting weight of 100 g. is possible. Depending

on the current, you canfish to approximately 35 m. deep. With the combination

of a small pirk andfeathers you can reel in even the biggest cod.

Heavy: a rod with a length of 1.80-2.25 m., approximately 50 lbs. The

usedlead pirks weigh anything up to 1 kg. A longer rod gives more action, but

it is also harder to reel due to the leverage effect. The multiplier contains

aminimum of 500 m. super braid with 15-20 kg. Breaking strain. A lot of

peopletend to use (too) thick super braid. A thicker line catches more current,

whichresults in the use of heavier weights. This has a disadvantageous influence

onthe action and the "fight" with the fish. With this rod you can fishdeeper

water, up to 300 m. Deeper water require a lot from angler and his gear.A level

wind multiplier is often not recommended for greater depths, ahigh-speed lever

drag multiplier is.

In addition to this you should also bring some medium/heavy spinningrods, to

fish from both shore and your boat. A 2.40- 3.00 m, 20-60grams rod will work

in most cases.Use a light lure for some spinning for, coalfish, mackerel, Pollack

and sea trout. A little bit heavier lure will giveyou chances for cod and haddock.

For fishing with bait, on flatfish you use the spinning rods from the boat, or a

slightly longer rod when shorefishing.  .

Line:

Braid: Because of the depths and the currents the only suitable fishing lineis a

braid. For sale under a number of brand names. Which line you choose is

apersonal choice, just remember don’t use a line that is too thick. There

arehardly any conditions in Norway where you will need more than a 0.25 mm

line. Ahigher diameter means more current on your line, than you also need

more weightin your pirk, read less action, read less fish. As a result of the rocky

bottomyou will also get stocked to it quite some times. A to thick braid

will“ancker” your boat and will give you the biggest trouble to release it

again.Buy your braid at home it is cheaper there.

Monofilament(Nylon): For the use of traces or rigs you will useMonofilament

line. In Norway are very good nylon lines for sale for a reasonable price, a brand

to recommend is triple fish. If you bring line notice it is soft, this will give a

better action.

Other equipment:

Swivels: You will use a lot of swivels on your sea fishing holiday, it is very wise

to buy them of the highest quality, and many of the largest fishes are lost

because of a bad (cheap) swivel. The most important thing is buyswivels that

lock themselves if the tension on the line is increasing.

Artificialbaits: In Norway almost only pirks are used. If you like to use

lead-heads in combination with shads, or twisters, bring it with you. The pirks

for sale in Norway are mostly of an extreme high quality but have a high price.

Some people are making the pirks themselves, or find cheaper “imitations”.

Always make sure the split rings and treble hook of the pirks are of a good

quality, and easy way to test this is to keep the hook inone hand and the pirk in

the other. Turn the two in opposite directions, a badring will open or deform

immediately. Good rings and hooks are a bit more expensive but and will make

a big difference the moment you hook a really bigfish.

Weights: In Norway fishing with bait is not really practiced by the local people.

Therefore bring all the weights you need. For bait fishing with wormsetc on

shallow water something between 40-100 grams. For deep waterfishing for

tursk, ling etc. 300-800 grams.

Gaff:Buy a Norwegian gaff. It is by far the best model, because of the angle

between the hook and the shaft.

Buttpad: Bring a butt pad if you are fishing in deeper water or with heavier

pirks this will mean almost everybody visiting Norway.

If you don’t posses or will not be able to bring your own fishing equipment,

wehave a shop on site where you can buy and rent out fishing equipment

Tips for fishing equiment:

Don’t buy your braid too thick. There is no use in Norway for braid over

0.25 mm thicker braid means also You have to use heavier pirks, read less

action, less fish.

Make your traces not to thin, useat least 0.70 mm monofilament (nylon) of

a soft brand for making traces. For fishing with bait use at least 0.80 because of

the teeth of the fish.

Keep your rigs simple. A basis set up forNorway: line, 0.80, loop, two or

three gummimacks ( the Norwegian rubber eel),swivel and pirk. Don’t make the

trace to short. At least the length of the rod,it is no problem to use twice or

more times the rod length. More distance between the different hooks means

more area covered, more chance of fish. You can also use a rubber eel, Mr.

Twister, shads or flies instead for the gummimack.

Learn the good knots. The knot to connect agummimack is the “dropper

loop”.  Don’t connect your gummimacks to the trace with a small (weak, easy to

open) swivel.

Fill your reel up. More line on the real will give a bigger diameter on your

spool which makes your reel much faster.Because the braid is so thin you might

want to use cheaper monofilament underneath.

Place a rubber pearl between the swivel and the top eye of your rod. This

reduces the chances of sharp edges on the steelor the rings.

Tips for better fishing:

Stop the boat before you start to fish. To avoid your line getting in a

strange angle behind the boat, and causing problems with your fishing friends

on the same boat, put the engine in reverse  before you turn it of or turn it to

neutral while fishing. By focusing on the water just around the boat it is easy to

check that the boat has stopped moving forward.

Fish always against the wind. When fishing in a small boat using artificial

baits, you always fish with allthe persons and rods at the same side of the boat,

against the wind. This means the boat is drifting away from the fishing place and

the lines are following the boat.

Use the same weights for pirks. Fishing with more than one person on the

same boat try to use fish with the same weights. This means the pirks will

behave on a similar way which avoids them from tangling.

Always jig with a straight line. When moving the rod up and down (jigging)

to attract the fish to the lure, always keep a straight line, not only on the way up

but at least so importanton the way down. Many times the fish bites when the

lures are sinking down.

Try to hit the bottom each time you jig your pirk. When you are lifting

the pirk and letting it down afterwards with a straight line you always have to try

to hit the bottom, this will turn up some sand that will encourage the fish to

bite.

Reel in if you line angle gets to high. Ifyou are doing the above you will

notice that afterwards as the boat is driftingaway from the line your line angle

will increase and you are forced to givesome line to let the pirk hit the bottom If

it gets difficult to “feel” thebottom it is better to reel in and start with a straight

angle again

Don’t cast. If you fish against the wind never castyour pirk from the boat when

you are drifting. Because you are drifting awayfrom your line it will make it

more difficult to fish your pirk properly if the angle of your line is increasing.

Keep always the tension on the line when the fish is on. Avoid a slack

line when drilling a fish, especially when “pumping” the fish many things go

wrong. Keep concentrated Don’t reel in too fast, and don’t pull when if the

fish is pulling, let the road and braid do its work.

Set your drag before fishing. When a large fish is making its first run when

the brake is closed it is often too late. After you have been stucked to the bottom

you have often closed your drag to increase the pressure to get the pirk

released. Don’t forget to open your drag before you start to fish again.

This is the classic mistake.Which every fisherman remembers having done wrong !!!!!!

Sharpen your hooks, if you are stuck on the bottom, a few times they will lose

their sharpness and you will hook less fish.

If you start catching fish try to remember your position by using GPS

arcross marks on land (if possible). This will help you to find your position

back again.

If using a depth sounder remember it is not a guarantee to catch

fish, also use your own common scene where to expect the fish. You can catch

a lot of fish without anything showing on the screen or catch nothing when the

screen is loaded with fish.

Shore Fishing:

alt

Skarnsundet Fjordsenter is offering some of the best shore fishing in Norway.

Our fishing camp situated at the skarnsundet marina is the ideal location because

of the tidal current connecting the Trondheim and Beitsadfjord makes a perfect

place for shore fishing adventures. As Norway is known for its boat fishing we

think we can offeryou exciting fishing from the shore. Feel free to contact us

with any question about shore fishing!

Shore fishing

Two techniques are mainly used for fishing from the shore. The use of a light

spinning rodworking a leadhead or shad to entise the fish into taking can be a

veryaffective method! The other technique is fishing with bait, which is the

more common way to fish and is just as affective!

The marks

We have manymarks to offer you from fast flowing currents, deep gullies, sand

banks or evenfrom the marina. Each of them can be easily accessed from the

fjordsentrewithin minutes! The marina is 50 yards from your apartment door!

Technique

My best techniqueis a standard pennel pulley rig with a 5/6 oz bomb lead! Also

working a leadhead or shad in the gullies on light equipment can be deadly. I've

taken manycod and coalfish on this method!

Equipment

I use a Diawaslosh loaded with 30pound line and a century carbon metal rod

for the heavyground! If I’m fishing the shallower waters I use a zziplex primo

and a Diawa7ht with 18 pound line! Standard shore fishing gear is good enough

and a goodsolid tripod is also needed! We also rent out shore fishing gear on

site.

Baits

if you wanna fish with a spinning rod you useartificial baits like leadhead,

shads, light pilks, spinner and blinker.

Bait fishing from the shore is mostly done with baitslike, lugworm, bluey,

haring, mussel and crab.

Fresh Water Fishing:

If you have the feeling to get away from boat or shore fishing for a day. We

have good fishing possibilities for fresh water fishing on pikes, salmon and trout

. Especially the river Namsos offer good possibilities for salmon and trout

fishing. Furthermore we have some good lakes in the area of Steinskjer to fish

for pike. We will be glad to organise a trip for you.
